It has been going on for quite a while now. They have it every year. And come this Friday, our tiny island will once again bear witness to the birth of yet another "Gorgeous People" brought to you by one particular magazine.

Here's a short recap in case you've forgotten what "Gorgeous" means:

Before we know it, the Fad people have been blogging for 2 months as of today. As part time students whose academic lives are rapidly spiralling towards the end of it all, these two months of juggling work and more work has not been easy. But it is you - every single one of you who reads this, that has kept our hopes alive and this fire burning.

A weak flicker of flame perhaps as some would agree. I know this blog and the Fad people's mission of walking on the edge of vogue has not always been up to the yardstick. Some days we floundered and fell royally below all expectations. Some days (especially coming from me, the Fad girl, all you get are words and more words - like now. Then you asked, "WHY NO PICTURES? I don't want to read."). Or our formatting is way off, the layout f-ugly beyond cringe and the topics expounded lacking in soul and substance.

We speak to supportive friends and loved ones, who pointed out that this blog is lacking in direction, focus, or simply the one thing that would keep you coming back for more. And then there were some who encouraged us, telling us they'd enjoyed particular entries.

Thank you. Thank you all for the feedback. We really appreciate that. And we treat every comment seriously, and incorporate them into our improvement plan as much as possible. We are still evolving. Still growing, still trying to grab your attention in this virtual world full faceless blogs and undifferentiated voices. In this heaps and mountains of blogs and websites, we know we need to stand out. And then be a cut above all.

And that takes time. Or it might never even come. There are days when we wanna give up. There are more discouraging days of doubts than joy and assurance of having done something phenomenal in these few months since we've built Fad from scratch. As December comes along and we enter the third Fad month, perhaps all of us need to remember again, that we write because we want to and we love to. That this is a place where we have a voice - a real voice. Not some personna that review products and talk about events bc we have to. And that this will also be a place where all of you, our readers, will and can have say!

My great dream for Fad is that one day, we will be able to persuade you to interact with us. To write in, to send us news that interest you. That our feature stories and topics covered will be so interesting you can't wait to come by everyday. That we've brought some inspiration, knowledge and even meaning to your lives. That this is a place that brings together all Fad people who share the vision of spicing up the local blog scene in an unprecedented, meaningful way ( - instead of being star bloggers who blog in Singlish and talk about mundane stuff, or worse, themselves.)

The long overdue revamp is on its way. We have not forgotten. And I truly hope that as we unveil a cooler Fad, you'd be with us all the way to witness every level we up from here on.

And if you were near the big screen outside Isetan, Shaw House, you would have seen the latest Takuya-starred Gatsby ad blasting every other minute. Who does not love Takuya? But seeing the effeminated moves elicited both squirmy discomfort and a strange thrill like he had personally winked at you or something.

Well... Here's a treat because the world can't get enough of a good thing.

5 Creative NEW ways to diet..

Its the season to be jolly again... bring out the turkey, pour the champagne and deck out that ever sinful chocolate log cake...

but wait... what happens after all the eating and drinking? Suddenly remembering that diet you have always talked about?

Losing weight should not be that difficult.
Going from a size 8 to a size 7 should not have to mean giving up on all that good food. Or even having to hit the gym 8 days a week! (if there was 8!)

So that Fad people, came up with 5 new creative ways to diet..

Creative, easy (easier) so that you do not get stuck in a "i am going on a diet" situation forever..

Becos it will always remain... Going...

and for the poor boys, maybe it will be easier to answer the "am i fat? (there is no right answer)" question..

Creative Tip 1: Write down all that you eat.. eating.. ate...

(Go on the guilt trip...)

Many of us eat too little but snack too much.. (see the irony!) so, if you wrote down EVERYTHING (yes, everything!), you will realise when u snacked too much. In this way, when you about to start eating anything you SHOULD NOT be, you will know it!

Creative Tip 2: Drink Green Tea!!

(not the sugarfied one like pokka or Yeos.. but green tea bags...)

There has been lots of discussion over the benefits of green tea, and one being the chemicals that speed up basal metabolism (which in other words, BURN FATS!!!). Enough said!

Side effects: lack of sleep... due to caffeine, so advice is to drink it in the day!

Creative Tip 3: Get Busy...

(aka Operation Stay Away from the Fridge)

Well, this has to do with our mentality... when we have nothing to do, we sit around, we get bored, we start having this itch and finally we start to wonder what is there to put into our mouths... Thus do something, find a hobby, walk around or even sleep just try to keep those itchy fingers away from the fridge!!

Creative Tip 4: Use smaller plates.. Yes.. smaller.. smaller..

(in other words, bluff yourself!)

This might sound silly (actually we think so too..) but if you use a smaller plate, you can actually fool your brain into thinking that you are taking in more food than you actually are.

Well, a smaller plate will look fuller than a bigger plate and thus you will have less.. thinking you had more..

Final Tip 5: Stop reading, Start doing!

(which means, you really have to do it...)

If you just talk about it but ain't doing anything about it... there is nothing we can help you as well. Take our advices and start NOW, write down what you been snacking on, brew some green tea and buy a pretty nice but small plate...

But still... Nothing beats having some exercise to keep healthy and look good!

A new way to Travel: Tagxe.com

Tagxe.com is a website that prides itself as a hybrid form of transportation. A combination of the cheap but slow buses and the fast but expensive taxis.

Tagxe is created as a hybrid form of public transportation. What this means is that like buses, people going to the same destination share the same vehicle. But because this is a taxi, you can get off near where you live. Also the taxi travels very fast because there are no unnecessary stops and a taxi is legally
allowed to go up to 90kmh

Personally (the Fad boy) feels that such a platform has been lacking and it has been about time someone did something like this!

From the website, you will be able to find out how to go about getting your first "shared" tagxe ride. In the forums, you will be able to find postings by others looking for tagxe mates.

Well, a interesting point is the effort they made to have a "fair" form of splitting the fare.

Above is just a simple summary. On the website you can find out the complicated methodology and the research done. (i can't believe there are websites just on splitting fares!)

It's the Singapore Design Festival! - Do you even know such a festival exists?

What commendable efforts from our govt to make Sg into such a lively place! We're gonna have F1 races, different festivals coming on here and there. Then the IRs will be up sooner than you can say "The ferry wheel copies London Eye!" (PS: It's called The Singapore Flyer, fyi. What a CREATIVE name!)

From 28 Nov to 8 Dec, this Design Festival is making the Fad people really excited. You must have seen the outdoor advertising for it near Cine and Nafa. Very interesting. Or at certain bus stops like the one opposite Liat Tower, showing clips promoting events like this (http://www.utterubbish.com/index.html):

Don't be put off by the $199 fee. That's too atas for even the Fad people. It will not be necessary. Look to your right, $5 admission for a myriad of exhibitions at the City Hall Building. Quite worth your money.

A few events caught our fancy. Like Dream Girls for those who love fashion and/or good looking babes.

Or Journey through ART & ARCHITECTURE of North East Line MRT Stations. (The website wrote: "930AM - 1130AM and 2PM - 5PM (these are only recommended off-peak hours, as this is a self-discovery tour)"

Translation: You don't have to pay. Just tap your card and walk around the various stations as if you have nothing better to do. While at that, look out for suspicious characters who carry big bags and stuff them in dark corners....

Lets not take things for granted...

Firstly, we would like to send our condolensces to the families of the deceased from the dragonboating accident in Cambodia.

Life might not exactly be short, it is afterall, all the years that we got. But life can be so unexpected. With surprises at every corner, sometimes good and sometimes bad.

I know this sounds cliche. But we might not be able to control our lives but we can control how we look at it. We can always live in regret or we can stop regret from becoming part of our lifes.

So one advice to everyone (the 126 Unique Visitors that we have + the 3 Fad people), do not take things for granted.

This is not our usual long and lenghty column. Nor will there be recommendations or jokes today. Just a piece of advice that we hope makes this world a happier place.

Lastly, regardless of religion, lets pray for these young men who lost their lifes and the many others in the world who has as well.

took some time off to check out a is for andy last week. the showcase at theatreworks featuring the famous artworks of the late"pope". well, i am not sure whether the art pieces are the original ones, drawn by warhol. nonetheless, it deserves a look.

indeed, who said art is only for the atas? i bet everyone has seen the famous marilyn monroe pic, that even photo booth has a program to let you warholise your pic as though you're monroe! or even the campbell can that many fashion designers have incorporated to their apparels or accessories. i love some of the pieces, the superman, the electric chair and chairman mao. with that being said, dont we still wonder why these art pieces are so expensive? some of his other not-so-impressive works (or at least to me and belinda) look like what anyone could draw. think dollar signs or the camouflage prints. what were those people thinking when they're paying for that? well, it could be a form of act-atas, i guess. and yeah what's the logic in hanging a picture of dollar signs that visitors get to see each time they're at your place or patronising your stall? they prolly thought you're trying too hard.

anyway, as much as i like some of the works, i obviously cant own them because auctions are starting at $80,000 for a print! however, if you're there, they actually do a miniature replica for $10. but seriously, now staying in the internet era, i'd save the 10bucks and print it at home.

i would have love to take pics in the exhibition. but well, photography is not allowed. as much as i dont understand the rationale behind it, (since we can easily find his works over the net_, but well, im a "law-abiding" citizen - i play by rules.

We're all too busy

Girls have such tough, beautiful lives. We are cursed for our vanity yet our beauty makes it all worthwhile. It sounds all too familiar... Snoozing the alarm, overslept. Frantic splash of water, some would call shower. Make up done, snap-snap, then zip - You're out of the house and off to school or work. There's never enough time for a relaxing high tea somewhere posh. There's never time to sleep. There's never time to window shop. Like roses without water, how can girls live without shopping? (Ok. The latest wave to hit the US (and... the online streaming scene of Singapore), for those who are over McDreamy-eyed Grey's Anatomy, X-men wannabe - Heroes, Forever running about in a haphazard fashion -Prison Break, lost in Lost, sick of The O.C., no longer desperately in love with the Desperate Housewives...

here's a new candy to feed your drama appetite.

Based on a popular novel series of the same name, Gossip Girl revolves around the lives of socialite young adults growing up on New York's Upper East Side who attend elite academic institutions (think babes, glamour, fashion and loads of bitchiness!) while dealing with sex, drugs, relationships and other teenage issues.

The series mainly centers around the lives of former best friends (so... is it friends turned foes? Expect some cat-fight here!), Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) and Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), and their shared romantic interest, Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford). Also then a sub-plot of how there's this guy that's always liked Serena but out of her league, that might end up with her. (Once again a ryan atwood and marissa replay from OC. What do you expect? It's from the same producer!)

Then there's this blog going around (in the show) which blogs about the Upper East Siders, spreading rumours, creating speculations, churning even more drama and rivalries amongst the "exclusive and vicious"group of friends.

Sounds familiar? Sounds like something happening in your life? Sounds like something happening to your friends' lives? Or sounds like something you wish would happen to your life?

Food Review - The Ship

When there is food involved, who else is there better to do the review but the ~~fat~~ Fadboy.

Today, I am bringing you to a place many aunties and uncles would be familiar with. A Singaporean "classic".. when western food first got popular, this was the "in" place to be...

Yes, The Ship... For the younger ones out there, ask your parents (or grandparents if u are younger den young).

And if you have never heard of it, its not because its located at some obscure place. In fact, its located in the heart of Orchard Road. Its just located on the 4th floor of Shaw Centre (the one besides Lido!)

What would be difficult is actually really finding it. It is located in a obscure corner of Shaw Centre.

Go to Isetan (in Lido! its not just a cinema!), go to the 3rd floor.. Try to locate the photo booth and walk into Shaw Centre. Ok, I narrowed your search, now try looking for that striking Neon Yellow Sign that SCREAMs!

Once you are in the restaurant, its a cruise (no pun intended!) from here...

Sit back... Relax... Let the waiter light the candle on your table... and enjoy the peace and tranquility. (You will soon forget the lights and buzz of busy Orchard Road.)

The place might appear alittle "Old - School", but I am impressed with the effort taken to decorate the place into its name worthy.

The ambience of the place is amazing. If you have a date, bring him/her here and impress them with your knowledge of this really cool and hidden spot! (remember to let them know u heard it from us!)

Ok, lets talk about the SERIOUS stuff now.

My date had the Norwegian Salmon that came with side vegs and potatoes. You can't really see it in the photo but underneath the salmon was spinach that were excellent! (we didnt notice until we were busy filling ourselves up!)

Thick, juicy and fresh... Just 3 words to describe the Salmon (yes, I stole more than just a bite!)

For myself, I could not decide between seafood and the beef. Thus I decided on a Combo! (even for combos they had quite a few to choose from!)

I chose one that had a beef (the waiter was nice enough to tell me which was the best cut of the day!) and lobster!

The meal concluded with cake (i saw others with a scope of ice cream) and coffee (or tea).. Nothing special, but just something simple you would expect after a meal from home...

All in all, it was a wonderful experience. Well worth the $60 spent. But I do have to comment that although the food was good but it was really the ambience that blew me over.

So I give it 4 out of 5 Fadpoints!

And do remember to pay, else the Captain might just ask you to walk the plank!

How far would you go to further your own career? Depending on the kind of industry you're working in, the types of ladder to climb vary. A more "interactive" industry where people interaction and PR skills are required will place more emphasis on presentation and appearance more than a back room operational type of job, where you only need to face computers and printers. Maybe it is not altogether off to start questioning how badly you want to excel and to what extent would you step on others or change yourself to gain the best advantages.

It helps to start from young. Aim to up some social status. And the move that reaps best result has got to be adopting a foreign name. And even that can be achieved through several ways.

1) D.I.Y
You look obviously made-in-Singapore, but have a pleasant sounding name that invoke curiosity such as Serene Tannor or Kimono Shu Zhen. Be prepared to have a convincing story to back you up. Tales like my mother is Japanese or my father is German can be hard to prove wrong if you can make sure no one knows how your dad's name is actually Lim Koh Pi or Ong Soon Huat. After you have your stories, remember to also go change your name on your IC. It's been done before. I personally know of such cases. But then you have to endure the nasty gossips and speculations going on. I suppose if you are hungry enough for an "atas" name, you probably won't mind.

2) Marry an authentic foreign name.
If fabricating tales is not your forte, marry the real deal. Once again, I know people who have done that so it's not entirely a far-fetched option. And this move has more crediblity than claiming your father's surname is Leeson or Ongele or Liulli (depending on your nationality-preference.) The benefit of marrying a real "Tanner" or "Taylor" is that they also act as an arm-candy or accessory when you go out. Also you might catch on the infectious accent, which is another factor in upping the social status and definitely sits well if you're in the more "out-going" industries where you have to meet clients.

Which brings us to another point: Accent!
A friend once pointed out the Singaporean accent kinda vulgarify things simply because of the way people say things. I kinda agree. But even in Singapore there are several types of accent. The Englishfied Sg accent, which can be found in those who attend A Certain School and perhaps some in those Really Just Cringe-worthy few. And there's the "wahlaueh.. why like that one?" way of speaking, which is less formal but rather common. And there are "people who do not speak English at all" accent, which I find jarring but sometimes I understand it can't be helped. But what I find most irritating has got to be FAKE accent!

Fake Accent People (FAP for short) either have stayed in Beverly Hills for too long, or watched Beverly Hills for too long. Like recently, I know of cases where people spend just like a week in London and return with like fabulously sing-song British accent! It must be like the lovely weather in UK or simply the miraculous beer. And what's like even more interesting is the fact that like some times, the FAP forgot about the lovely weather and beer that they blurt out "la! lohs! or lehs!" to like the amazement of those around them.

Or Mary who is an authentic Singaporean, married to Larry, who is from America, and she was suddenly infected with a horrible disease I think bc now she speaks with an American twang which she adopted and carried to work, torturing her poor co-workers, who felt the pressure to alter their accent when speaking to her. But no one complains bc Mary is the boss!

It's fun I think for those of us surrounded by FAP bc we are constantly trying to spot such blunders and loopholes and readily accuse these peeps of being fake! But isn't it also sad that these people feel the need to armour themselves with such extra traits thinking it will put them in better light? And even sadder I think is that it does cast a better light on them.

But I think if accent and fake names-turn-real did not help, there will always be people who are willing to sleep their way up the ladder, and sadly I've also heard of tales like that which circulates even in school campuses. When I say some things are better when started out young, I wasn't really thinking of this.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to personal choices and integrity. I'd not be jealous of the FAP or the "Tannors", but I would wonder how they sleep at night, even for those who could sleep their way up.

BTW: Does Serene Tannor or Serene Tanatsuya sound better?

you've got it right, zoukout 2007 is just around the corner! with big names like armin van buuren and carl cox, how not to be tempted? armin van buuren was also spinning previous year and it was MIND-BLOWING! the music was fantastic and the visuals were spectacular. there were those laser thingy (flashlights?), and they had some circus performers breathing fire and how everyone let go of themselves and sway to the music. psychedelic, i'd say. and the best part, it was pouring that year (and during the time when avb was spinning), the rain didnt dampen the mood - instead the rain made it all the more AMAZING. imagine, dancing to the hard-thumping music with raindrops falling hard on your skin. GOOD STUFF.

You get the drift. The show is now into its 9th cycle and STILL searching for America's NEXT Top Model. (Enough already!)

Through its weekly style of trying to create cat-fight and sobbing drama amongst the girls and ushering them in front of the panel of judges at the end of each episode for some one to be sent home, ANTM has established itself as an entertainment staple in our households every Thursday evening.

With its eclectic mix of judges consisting of a hunk (who is for once not a gay!), a guy who is (for once!) a girl, girl who is already too old to be a girl, going by some name that sounds like chocolates (hint-hint: Twix) and any unfortunate soul that craves his/her 15 minutes (literally) of fame, we as viewers are bored if they aren't.

Maybe Tyra Banks should focus on more sensationalising works which she seems to excel in...

And pass on the model hunt to someone prettier:

The Model Life - note the pun,

with its dash of "care-bear-ness", pretty young things and camera-captured glamour.

Indeed, the Fad girl caught the first episode last week and felt it to be different from the usual bitchy ANTM. This is more "wholesome", as ALL the 6 models stand a chance to be scouted or even land a contract with NeXt agency. All of them could get a contract, not just the winner.

Also noteworthy is the fact that Petra Nemcova, the founder of this show, is the survivor of the 2004 Asian earthquake. She watched her fiance, famous fashion photographer, Simon Atlee, got washed away by the waves while she hung on to her dear life, clinging to a tree for 8 hours. She was eventually rescued but she lost someone she loved in the disaster. Atlee's body was found four months after he was washed away.

the Fad girl's favourites so far are Angelika and Valeria.

Angelika bc she's an ice queen and claims she does not give a damn about what the world thinks. (Hmm. Can having a backbone propel you far in this industry, my dear?)

Valeria bc she is the most bubbly and happy one. And she has a surfer-babe charisma and seemed friendly and approachable. the Fad girl likes supporting the understated and unpolished diamonds sometimes!

Of course there are also your typical diva and innocent 16-year-olds who whole-heartedly believe in the power of dream and having the courage to pursue your passion. As well as your usual drama and shocking scenes, such as in episode 1 when someone was scolded for talking on the phone while the agency people were speaking and someone else was told to lose weight or give Fashion Week a miss!

If Singapore was a Company?

So once again its a Sunday, doesn't it seem to always pass by so fast?

Perhaps (yes, its perhAps), we can try to cheer u up with a little light read? the Fad boy has always been kind of like an anti conformist (~~to a certain political party~~). So when a certain thought strikes him about the possibility of a Singapore.com instead of .gov, he feels a need to express this emotional outflow...

Well, we don't intend to be taken down for writing this so it will just be a light read and represents the view of the Fad boy ~~and the thousand others who feels the same but do not dare to speak up~~.

Ok, so what happens if Singaore is to be a company? What would really happen?

1. We would have a huge divide between top management and the general workers pay packages. Obviously the lack of a min wage rate within the company doesn't help this situation. And our CEO would want to double all top management compensation to ensure "loyalty".

2. We would have a very LONG heirechey. Every 4 yrs or so, we have to create a new mentorship position to "coach" our CEO (although the age of these CEO taking up position has been getting higher and higher). We will have SCEO, MMCEO, maybe we should have SMMCEO soon.

3. The trade union will provide for other services, like selling groceries, providing insurance, cremetory services but somehow will not have time to listen to our general workers (which happens to be their actual job?).

4. To control the flow of traffic within the company, we will keep setting up new entry point before existing entry points to deter people who REALLY need to get to where they need to go.

5. And when that doesn't work as well as we hope it to be, we use our high technology to take payments from these entry points. That will "definitely" help the situation!

6. Our management will not have to worry about competitors because the good ones are either bankrupt, exile or dead. While the rest, lets not even talk about the crazy things they did.

7. Except for the lack of HumanRights practices, which might get us into trouble if we were listed in the USA, we can easily go around these issues by just listing somewhere that would not care less.

Well, all in all.. We will be an efficient and effective company which generates increasing profits, which always get prizes for being competitive and have a management who expects the workforce to be ALWAYs behind them.

Kudos for all the hardwork done in bringing us to be such a successful company, but maybe we should consider that afterall Singapore is a Country.

ps: some people are warning me against such a post, but i do believe that ~~there is not enough pple reading this to make it a big hooha~~ a certain amount of free speech exist in this country.

What do Stars do?

A philosopher once asked, "Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?"

Stardust opened in Singapore this week and the Fad girl caught the falling star.

A Neil Gaiman graphic novel turned major motion picture, Stardust ultimately is a fairy-tale love story, taking the audience along with it on a magical adventure filled with wicked witches, power-hungry princes, flying pirates and comical ghosts.

Now if you were expecting a stylo deliverance of intrigue and sci-fi bc since this is based on Gaiman's graphic novel, then you might be slightly disappointed because what the Fad girl discovered was that this is more a fantasy film produced for children from age 5 to 50.

However if you just want to unwind and have some fun, enjoy the story like how you would enjoy Shrek with LOTR and a dash of true love between a fallen star (the beautiful Claire Danes who shines, literally) and the chosen one (see Charlie Cox undergo an extreme makeover from a clumsy bloke to a fine handsome cutie), Stardust fulfils that and gives you more!!

Being a softie, the Fad girl loves the ending scene. In order not to spoil the broth for all of ya, it shall not be disclosed here. Do ask her if you really have nothing better to do! :p

Anyway look out also for the stellar performance by Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert de Niro (the Fad girl's personal favourite in the film) and be blasted away by this super-nova-licious new release that just hit Singapore.

so here we are, to present you the pictos we have taken from aoa 2007.

got to see some interesting works - the winners of crowbar awards, or some other winning outdoor advertisements. but sadly, it's all pictos - rather disappointing for me. i was expecting to see the "real thing" or at least some form of prototype, where we get to touch it! in case you're wondering whether it's REALLY bad, well, it has some redeeming factor. got to see some new advertising medium that's not found here - like showpod and business kad.

showpod - it makes use of graphics to create a vivid image (and i VOUCH for that, i was totally blown over!) and it keeps transforming! no, not transformers! - think, an image transforming from a skull to aerobics instructor- and the transition is flawless! how cool is that! i tried to search online to have a better idea of the technology or the technique they use, but to no avail. bummer.

on another note, to all emo fans, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE is coming this december! tix are available at sistic now, so what are you waiting for? gimme a holler if you're gg for this BLACK PARADE - i'll meet you there!

After the weekend celebrations, the very much hyped (and commercialized) Halloween is a thing of the past... or is it???

For those of you who do not know, tonight (31st of Oct) is the REAL THING... Jack-o-Lanterns (the picture on top), Dressing up, trick or treat... These are common things that usually happen overseas.

In Singapore, its usually just a reason for clubs to JACK up prices and make it another party nite!

So the typical dressing (in this case our fren on exchange), is the skull, the vampire or even just darth vader!

That isn't to say we dont have our own culture or even our own ways of dressing up!

Like this typical chinese feel... The female chinese vampire with the typical red cheeks! Also, check out the paper dolls (that are burnt to the underworld as slaves). I must say its pretty scary!

How about this girls with their very innocent looking convent uniforms? Looking at the pale faces and messy hair, dont think anyone picked them up that night!

Sleep tight tonight and remember to avoid looking out to the moon... U might just see a witch on a broomstick!

Now this is quite off the beaten path. We've heard of french film fest, chinese film fest, Oktoberfest, manifest... But German Film Fest? Now that's something.

The Cathay Cineplex and Goethe-Institut in Singapore are organising the 11th German Film Fest from 1 Nov to 11 Nov.

the Fad people recommend from the wide selection, the following few worth paying your 10 bucks for:

1. Cutting Edge (Die Aufschneider): If you like hospital drama (Grey's Anatomy, E.R., Scrubs) you would like this comedy about two hospitals competing with each other, trying to prevent being closed down.

2. Emma’s Bliss (Emmas Glück): A love story/drama will never be complete without someone dying, some intrigue and adventures. Emma's Bliss seems to have all these ingredients. Definitely a must-watch for all romantics out there.

3. Heavyweights (Schwere Jungs): For the sports buffs who love a good laugh. Bears the shadow of The Mighty Ducks starring Emilio Estevez. (We are assuming you have a childhood here since The Mighty Ducks is quite an old movie.)

4. Hotel Very Welcome: German version of The Beach (which is an amazing film by the way, not only because Leo DiCap is in it) involving travel in Asia. Perhaps something that might strike a chord with all of us?

5. Where is Fred? (Wo ist Fred?): the Fad people love saving the best for the last. "Where is Fred?" wins this because upon reading the summary of the storyline, we burst out laughing!

Beware of the Pancake Stalker

I have my fair share of serendipities and odd tales with strangers to tell, each unique experience makes for great meal time conversations and laughter. In a way, I go about my life collecting these stories because I reckon it spices up my life.

But this one, this one I'm gonna share is a little odd.

One day in July, I decided to go have dinner myself while waiting for a friend to join me in town. Cedele it is for they have wonderful supposedly "healthy" sandwiches. The joint at Wheelock is not bad with its decor too. It's an all time fave.

So I ordered this Beef Burger and a glass of white wine. It was nearing 9pm and they were running out of ingredients. So I was approached countless times by their server asking if they could give me this bread over the other, this vegetable over the salad. I was famished hence anything goes. I did not even kick up a big fuss. Quietly sipping my Chardonnay, I was in a world of my own till one of chefs came out with a plate of heart shape blueberry pancakes.

I looked at him bewildered as he stuttered in a foreign-accented English, "Complimentary pancakes," he said.

"Oh for what?" I asked. I thought it was a mistake. Wrong table.

"It's complimentary pancakes." He repeated, looking awkward. I thought I was putting him on the spot because he cant speak English so I said my thanks and accepted. Then I pulled on of the servers and asked if this was a mistake or something to appease me for making me wait and changing my Beef Burger.

"Urm yes." One hesitated in replying me. I was getting impatient. I do not wanna be charged for something I had not ordered so I grabbed another server to question. A girl this time.

"Err you see, sometimes in our restaurant we like to randomly give out pancakes." I finally believed. But after a few minutes, the girl returned and said, "Miss, actually the chef wanna ask if you are interested to be his friend. So he made you these pancakes."

I freaked out. "So what is your answer?" The girl pressed on. I was curious to know who that was but I did not wanna give out my number so I said, "Could I finish my dinner then decide?" She said ok and left. But returned 10 minutes later, "So what is your decision?" I was annoyed. DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I JUST SAID? "Well then. I do not wanna give him my number but perhaps I will go thank him later... (for wasting his company's resources and risk getting fired - just to get some girl's number)" Stiff smile.

So my friend arrived and I begged him to finish the pancakes with me because it was way too much. They were damn fine though. Deliciously fluffy. But my friend refused to even touch the pancake for fear of being clobbered to death by the chef.

Then we were finally leaving and I asked to thank the chef. He refused to come out of the kitchen. Took him 5 years later and he emerged. It was the same dude who first came to me with the plate of pancakes. Quite malu since the staff were trying not to laugh. He asked me in mandarin if my friend were my boyfriend. I said no. "I didn't even get your number!" He lamented. I insisted that the pancakes were real good and I'll see him around.

But I never return again because I was so freaked out. Then one evening in August, I was dragged there by friends. We were served the "complimentary pancakes" again! And this time, I merely accepted those goodies without questioning anything. I thought, "Fine! If you wanna waste your cafe's resource, that's your business but I'm not gonna give you my number." So we wolved down the heart shape pancakes and left. I decided to never return again, or writing to Cedele to inform them of such phenomenon.

Then a few days ago, I read from a food blog:

...a waitress brought a plate of blueberry pancakes to our table.

Uh-oh, order screw up, I thought to myself.

Instinctively, we informed her we didn't order the pancakes and in fact, we were about to call for the bill. But she insisted that we accept the pancakes and immediately, the skeptic in me thought it could be one of those "promotional items" where they introduced something new to diners, trap them into playing for something they didn't order (Sushi Tei used to do this).

Then she mentioned,"It's from the Chef" for undisclosed reasons and believe me when I say the 3 of us were flabbergasted. Bewilderment soon turned to sheer amusement because the pancakes were HEART-SHAPED! As in "L.O.V.E-I-heart-you" heart-shaped! I know it sounds secret-admirer-creepy but we weren't folks who would reject free pancakes. I don't have a picture because I didn't think there would be anything blogworthy after that many visits. Howdy-doo I was wrong!

Never mind it seems like something out of a Garry Marshall movie, it ain't everyday when people like us receive treats of affection from the Chef. Served with orange butter (which I likey very much) and maple syrup, it was filled with bounteous goodness of fresh blueberries. Arh, creepy or not, it was fun slicing through the hearts.

That is not all, someone commented after this post:

Hmmm...me too when I was with my cousin some time back...except we had heart shaped pancakes with Marks and Spencer-ish choc coated raisins in it...creepy as it was,we polished it off (it was soooo good) and then I haven't been back since haha...wee bit freaked out...we put it down to me being there frequently OR the chef being in lurve with my cousin... =)

Holyshit! What is going on?

No matter. I reckon this is either a guerilla marketing technique or the pranks of some really bored chefs trying to spice up their lives. Or a run at who can get the most numbers from girls.

Why don't you try it? Dress up a little and go have lunch at Cedele with your group of girlfriends. Who knows! You might just get some complimentary heart shape pancakes for free.

Here's a topic close to the Fad girl's heart: Rugby.

Why? Well that's another story for another day, but we reckon you have to ask her personally for it. But we do know that the Rugby World Cup is over (South Africa won it, if you didn't realise.) and some people are rather "sian" now because there's no more action.

Not true, apparently! The Singapore Cricket Club will be hosting their annual Rugby Sevens, hosting teams from all around the world while celebrating their 60th anniversary in style!

This weekend (27th Oct to 28th Oct), head down to the Padang and roll in the green field with the rest of the party. You might not know the game, but you sure know how to spot those good looking ruggers, duncha?

Or you can take this chance to learn the game, since many claimed not to understand the beauty of 30 men piling on top of one another. If heat and action is not your cup of tea, then go check out the Rugby 7s Village where there are F&B and prizes to be won.

5. I will start with some light read, this website has a list of the craziest fad from the 1920s - 2000. Surprisngly, streaking appears to be a fad in the 1970s and tattoos in 1990s (Amazing how some things go a full circle).

4. This lemonade stand game, seems to have been around for a long time. Be your own lemonade stand boss and make as much profit as possible. Be careful of rainy days (noone walks around when it rains!)

However, U have to be REALLY sure that you do not have to pay attention to everything else (like, your boss walking around, or participation marks for class). This game require attention!

3. This highly addictive game kept me going on and on that the next thing i knew, it was the end of class. Simply just move the red box around without touching the walls and the moving blue boxes (sounds easy? Try!). My best timing is 15secs. Drop me an email if u do better!

2. Isketch (think online win, lose or draw!!), it was really popular a few years back. But kinda died down. It kept me sane in my earlier Uni days and I hope it will do the same for you!

1. The aim of this game is to create a chain reaction of explosions to meet the target! Its simple at the start but gets more difficult. Have a fren and challenge who manages to meet the targets first to add more fun! Simply a no brainer yet surprisingly interesting!

Firstly, we apologise for the lack of updates. Missing out on one blog post meant so much to us that we punished our livers so hard last night. Giving ourselves such terrible headaches this morning. I only manage to bring myself to blog now... Haha..

Much has been going on within the thefadpeople, having started for 3weeks (thanks for all the support so far!!), there are still tweaking and planning that we at the thefadpeople have to do.

Is it October.. or is it Oktober?

Yes its Oktoberfest once again!! Once the Festivals of all festivals in Germany, it is now celebrated even in Singapore.

Only difference perhaps is that in Germany its celebrated over 16days attracting close to 6 million participants each year!
(If we ever come close to that number, the government wouldn't need to worry abt babies)

In the event, Visitors consume large quantities of food such as sasage, hendl and sauerkraut. Not to forget even LARGER quantities of BEER!

Well in Singapore the good people from Erdinger (or to make a profit) has brought in the Event for the past few years.

Running from the 23rd - 27th Oct. It promises to mirror the events going on in Germany (the beer, the sausage and even a German Band).

But for those lazy to click around, the fad people has done some snooping on your behalf.

There are several ways u can grab your tickets, Sistic (cheapest $42 and $45), Hotline ($44 and $47) and At the Door (we really dun encourage this at all!)

"Eat" and Run

Food blogging seems to be the craze these days. What better place to be in and start than here in Singapore? The melting pot of gastronomical delight, east-meets-west-meets curry chicken and prata. Even if you can't cook, you can still drool over the sumptuous looking photos on blogs, no?

Despite living in a country where hawker centres and food courts are the pride of our culinary identity, I never liked mee-poks and rojaks till recently. In fact, I have always been more interested in Western food, à la Italian and French, mostly. I watch Anthony Bourdain and Nigella Lawson. I worship Jamie Oliver. That's where I learn everything I know about food. That's who I learnt cooking from.

Focaccia bread, mozzarella cheese on home made pizzas, anchovies in salads, extra virgin olive oil, zucchinis, foie gras, raviolis, smoked salmon with capers, grilled ribeye steaks.... The list goes on.

Having travelled to the Mecca of Pasta & Bread, Europe, and fulfilling my dream of eating from Tuscany to Hungary, I was grateful for an eye-opening and very satisfying food-and-cultural experience of the West. But strangely, I miss home food. I miss those simple yet delicious local fare. Whilst travelling, I find myself drooling over the thoughts of bah-coh-mee, nasi lemak and fried kway teow with hum. It was painful not having chillis bc the Europeans cannot take the spicey heat. It felt weird to keep eating pastas and nothing else.

So upon my return, there's a new-found respect and love for local cuisine. I am glad that I live in a country that embraces diversity in food. A place that celebrates eating. A place where I can have both my paella and my ice-kachang.

In today's column, we'll feature some interesting food blogs. The "Eat" place to go for your different needs: be it when you are hungry, when lunch time is nearing, when you are bored in the office/classrooms and have nothing interesting to read, or simply need new ideas as to where to hang out this coming weekend. You know where you can get new ideas and inspirations!

The office favourite of those foodies who live for the moment. As the name suggests, slightly pretentious food blogging. Nothing pompous. Rather down to earth. With pictures and words aplenty, what the Fad girl likes about this blog is the fact that at the side bar, there are different categories, all neatly sorted, for what might interest different readers. Reviews, recipes and even a food thesaurus. Very meticulous.

4. SHE BAKES AND SHE COOKS (http://thebakerwhocooks.blogspot.com/)

Martha Stewart of the lot. With rather nice pictures and a blazing passion for cooking. The USP (Unique Selling Point) of this blog is its rustic presentation and links to local food stores and sites. Who'd have thought we can assign IPS addresses to groceries now? Awesome. For the serious foodies and chefs.

5. MAD BAKER (http://www.madbaker.net/)

Yes we've heard of Chet Baker, the famous Jazz singer. But Mad Baker? Well, this is more of an online Bakery pet hobby of some software developer here in Singapore. The Mad Baker makes and she SELLS her pretty bakes online. Looking at those piles of beautiful photos just tempt me to wanna order from this really cool Mad Baker. (Go look at those rainbow macaroons!) After all, Mad rhymes with FAD! :)

6. HUNGRY GO WHERE (http://www.hungrygowhere.com/)

The Singapore Food Guide. Search engines and ratings. A comprehensive F&B database of local restaurants. Also a portal with members incentives of vouchers and discounts. What I don't like about it is the Yellow Pages feel, but a very useful portal nonetheless!

Children, your mom is right when she says breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So important that someone decides to dedicate a blog to solely breakfast! For a cosmopolitan read beyond our tiny island, complete with drools-worthy pics; for those who wonder what goes beyond scrambled eggs and brioche, check out this blog.

For those who believe art is food, art is photography, art is a form of expression as well as obsession, then this is the blog for you. With a french touch, this is the virtual form of A Year In Provence and the likes. Très lovely!

Authentically Singaporean, with engaging description as well as interesting photos. The blogger also provides his own insights and injects a personal sense of humour and style. A nice finishing touch was to include the address of the place introduced at the end of the post.

theFadpeople usually churn out a post every other day. They usually try to talk about everything and anything under the sun. Stuff which hopefully piques your interest, and sometimes when they are really lucky, hot news that are so en vogue that they are fresh from the oven! These are usually done in the morning after the deadline is due bc one or the other Fad people is usually out late at night, partying away.

This is a tidbit we shall share with you. theFadpeople meet up once a week, usually at places where you can buy a drink and sit for long. Usually in a central location or near our estates. (Hunt us down and we'll buy you a drink and maybe feature you in a post!) And we would plan the topics to cover. There will be arts, design, architecture, FOOD!, music, fashion, technology, current affairs, cars, EVENTS!, interesting ads, youtube clips........... and even a Column!

Yes, a weekly column, on Sundays, as kickstarted by the Fad boy last week. (Nope, he is not a millionaire yet.) We shall try (no promise here) not to be some predictable editor on Sunday Times when he or she usually harps on a certain subject.

We shall try to inject Variety and FUN!

A series of 7 numbers. A 1 in a billion chance of getting it all right. And for this coming monday its the chance of winning 5.5 million dollars!

Its amazing the optimism one has when it comes to "buying a chance".

Lets talk alittle about this "buying a chance". I admit to being one of the many who queue in line at one of those Singapore Pools booth. Standing there, you could feel the eagerness of all in the queue, its like... queueing up to go on stage to collect the most well-behaved student when you were in primary school.

And usually when the prize is above 1 million dollars, the queues get exponentially longer. For the 5.5million chance, i suggest that you either have bought the ticket or go queue at 6am before the shop opens at 9am. No. 1 rule: Never go queue at lunch time, unless you really like queueing.

But at this 7-11 in Yishun ( I cant remember where exactly), u might have to start queueing at 1am. It is the favourite of Toto Punters, rumour has it that this particular place has produced 7 Toto top prize winners in the last few years. And if you bought your ticket here, your chance of winning actually increases (I know it sounds weird, thats why i have never went there).

My favourite ritual has to be after buying the ticket, holding it proudly, staring at the computer generated numbers and telling myself HUAT ARH! (that kinda means lucky lucky lucky).

Ok, before I continue to destroy my image further. Let me try convince you about buying a chance. Buying Toto, has no difference compared to investing in stocks.

The same rule applies, High Risk = High Returns.

Toto
Risk = Lose all you ~~bet~~ invested
Returns = Max 5.5million!!!

Stocks
Lose a fraction (sometimes also all you invested)
Never 5.5million (unless u invested 5mil)

I have a proposal, imagine you invested 500 dollars with me and i offer you 2 extreme scenerios in 1 month, 1. you lose all your money or 2. your investment returns u $120,000. What did I do? I invested all your money in 1 whole month worth of Toto. Don't close the page yet!

The benefits you gained, 1. Higher chances of striking with the pooling effect. 2. With a larger pool you diversified your risk and increased your possibilility of returns but decreases expected returns. 3. You might have heard about Audrey Tatou and a certain picturesque Montmartre. You might have watched La Vie En Rose and Paris Je T'aime, You might have uttered "Je ne sais quoi", attempted sayings like "joie de vivre" or even read about "Laissez-faire" in Economics textbooks.

If all else fails, perhaps (we hope) you'd have known the Eiffel Tower, tried "à la carte" or eaten at Délifrance? :)

If you are absolutely mad about French films, this event will be quite a delightful way to spend weekend, or an evening with loved ones or even by yourself. You could have even known about this before we wrote it. (We know the Fad girl is really excited!)

Well, the previous post was a nice read, and the fad girl obviously possesses much better writing skills. But i will try not to sound like a ching- chong ah beng from somewhere up North..

The idea of the blog (a lifestyle blog) has been explained by the fad girl. But she failed to do something else. That is to introduce ME!!!

I have searched around and this has to be one of the BEST looking picture i have of myself... I actually slimmed down in this pic. ( the ~~fat~~ fad boy)

But more importantly, i want people to know what kind of person I am... That photo is only Skin-deep (although it looks like its quite a few layers of meat). Never Too Old To Be Young

Remember the old days of collecting erasers with flags on them? Buying twenty-cent popsicle from school canteen and hanging on monkey bars.

Remember the time when writing notes on napkins (pizza boxes, glass bottles, you name it!) was cool? When "The One Nine Nine Shop" offered all the trinkets we can buy for, well, one dollar and ninety-nine cents. When no one thought twice about laughing out loud at Macs, at the silliest jokes. Irreverence is somewhat a natural ability of the youths, lost gradually as we grow up. But even then, our idea of fun was simple.

Then somehow along the way, we seem to forget what Fun is all about.

Perhaps that was the one big reason why the Fad people set up this blog. the Fad people consist of two youngsters who wanted to make a difference. This blog is their first leap of faith into the unknown. ("Yes! It will be fun!" "No, it has to be informative and serious. We do not want readers to think we are smoking them." "Heck! Let it be all!") Where would they end up? We're not sure now. But anything is possible. And for now, this blog is a platform for all to interact, to come together and connect. A channel of information-sharing, news en vogue in all arenas. A lifestyle blog. Open voyeurism, somewhat.

So write to us! Tell us what you love. Share what you see. And we'll share ours with you.
